On Kolchak: "Mr. R.I.N...For Your Information:

On Kolchak: "Mr. R.I.N.G.", Mr. Carmichael, the mortician/undertaker/"cosmetologist"/whatever, was played by Robert Easton, a/k/a "The Henry Higgins of Hollywood".
For many years (mainly the late '50s/early '60s), Robert Easton was Hollywood's favorite dumb hillbilly ("I done got kicked in the haid by a mule!"); he played this role in movies and TV shows for years. until he got tired of the typing and took up dialects and accents.
The accent Easton uses here is one of his many British dialects, sharpened over some years he spent living in England; he later expanded his expertise to include the dialects of most European countries, ultimately going into business coaching other actors in how to sound foreign (his best-known client was Charlton Heston, who wrote reams of praise for him in his books).
You might also remember Easton in his bearded later years, when he made frequent appearances with Johnny Carson, wowing the studio audiences with voices from all over the world.
Hoping this finds you ...
